ADDIS ABABA – The president of South Sudan, Salva kiir Mayardiit has this afternoon arrived in Addis for another face to face talks with the rebel leader, Dr Riek Machar.
The meeting is the second time for the two rival leaders after signing a landmark cessation of hostilities on May 9.
The two warring leaders of the South Sudan conflict are under intensive pressure from the US, UN and IGAD countries to bring a deadly 6 months civil crisis to an end.
Their meeting in May provided a ground for negotiators to map out a long term ceasefire and to work out on proposals for transitional government.
President Kiir after signing a ceasefire document in May claimed that he signed the document in duress “after threats from the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Haile Mariam Desalegn to arrest the two” if they don’t sign the document. a statement the rebel leader, Dr Riek Machar denied.
According to the IGAD secretariats, the two leaders are expected to meet every month to evaluate the performances of the cessation of hostilities they signed and the negotiations in the Ethiopian capital. However, despite the agreement both leaders signed to cease arm manoeuvring, there are evidences of truce violations by either side of the conflict. There are still sporadic attacks on each other’s position inside the vast South Sudan country.
The meeting between the two leaders is anticipated to take place tuesday and a document of ceasefire to follow the cessation of hostilities they earlier signed is thought to be inked on the day.
