ADDIS ABABA – South Sudan’s SPLM-i-O leader, Dr Riek Machar has called on his opponent in South Sudan civil conflict Salva Kiir to come to Addis Ababa and “kick off from where the two principals left off” earlier this year.

Machar in a press statement extended to the Upper Nile Times expressed regrets and dismay of why Kiir abstained from attending “the final talks” despite earlier commitments.

“I am aware of the immense suffering the war brought to bear on the people of South Sudan. This is not the time to procrastinate but to expedite the peace agreement such that our people rebuild their lives in peace and harmony. its time to restore law and order to South Sudan. I call on President Salva Kiir to heed the cries of our people for peace. It is time he packed his suitecase and come to Addis Ababa such that together we quickly work out the terms of the peace agreement before the dateline set by the IGAD mediators which is March 5th 2015”, Machar’s press statement reads.
Machar said that he has been in Addis Ababa all this time to ensure that peace is signed and the country returned to normalcy.

Machar’s call for Salva Kiir to come back to Addis Ababa talks was also echoed by many European and US observers who called his absence a “tactical delayment of peace” to South Sudan.

Both Machar and Kiir are under intense pressure to compromise on sticking power sharing issues and bring about peace in South Sudan.
