Dr. Riek Machar arrives in Ethiopia for face to face meeting with Salva Kiir


GAMBELLA – The leader of the rebel faction of the Sudan People&146;s Liberation Movement (SPLM) party, Dr Riek Machar Teny has this afternoon arrived in Ethiopia via Maiwut county of Upper Nile to meet Salva Kiir Mayardiit in the Ethiopian captital city of Addis Ababa where the ongoing IGAD led peace talk is currently taking place. The rebel leader arrived in Gambella town amid a heavy security provided by the Ethiopian defence force and quickly boarded a charter flight to Addis Ababa less than 2 hours after arrival.

The rebel leader was also escorted by his own personal guards and senior officials of his group, the SPLM-in-Opposition.  

Dr Riek on an arranged meeting by the UN chief, Ban Ki-Moon, US secretary of state John Kerry as well as IGAD countries is to meet President Salva Kiir on Friday to diffuse the ongoing civil war in the country. The two are poised to meet for the first time after 5 months of bloody conflict which the government of South Sudan called a foiled coup d&146;tat by the former vice president. An allegation Dr Riek denied.


The two will also talk about the arrangements for interim government where a power sharing deal will likely be at the forefront of their agendas.
