UNSC authorises UNMISS to use maximum force against sexual perpetrators in a new mandate

NEW YORK – UN Security Council in a new mandate to UNMISS ordered the UN force in the country to use any maximum power to prevent sexual atrocities committed by armed groups in the country.

The UNSC voted on Friday to extend the mandate of UNMISS for another year. The resolution (part of which was extended to this paper) asks for UNMISS to intervene in any military confrontation that targets civilians. The UN force is also authorised by the council to monitor perpetrators of hate speech and obstructions of civilians movement.
The strict mandate came amid reports by right groups of South Sudan being at risk of genocide.
