RENK – Multiple Sources from Upper Nile State disclosed to Upper Nile Times today the news of Gen. Yoanis Okiech, a Commander allied to Dr. Lam Akol who spearheaded the attack against SPLM-IO forces around Bouth on January 5, 2017, has met his fate.  This news came after a report of Gen. Gatwech Chan aka Tanginye losing the gun battle after attacking SPLM-IO base.

According to one of the SPLM-IO General who chose to remain anonymous, reported that Gen Yoanis Okiech, after surviving the first clash with our force decided to escape to Khartoum but unfortunately both Yoanis Okiech and 27 of his bodyguards had failed to manage their exit strategies for them to escape to other side.

Our correspondence has tried to contact Dr. Lam Akol to verify the detail of this news, however, the communication did not go through.

Gen. Yoanis Okiech from Chollo community and Gen. Gatwech Chan from Pangak Nuer were reported to have link with Dr. Lam Akol who broke away from Juba government after July 8, 2016, violent conflict fitting Dr. Machar’s forces against Salva Kiir’s forces.  Dr. Lam Akol once known for leading the Democratic Change had abandoned his old vision to form another rebel movement with both men tasked to command such forces as a pretext for creating another insurgent that seemed to also allied with Juba Government.

Gen Yoanis Okiech is a brother to former SPLM secretary general Pagan Amum Okiech.

Gen Tany Ginye killed along with his 2 sons. Gen Okiech wounded and narrowly escaped
