The Chairman of the SPLM-IO Accepts his Appointment as the First Vice President of South Sudan

CAIRO – The Chairman of the SPM-IO, who is also the First Vice President Designate, Dr. Machar, has accepted his appointment as the First Vice President of South Sudan.  In a move that he described as surprising during an interview with the BBC today, Dr. Machar has stated that the move is a “step in the right direction.”

Although many agreements and ceasefires have been violated for over 18 months, the signatory agreement signed in August 2015 has changed the political landscape allowing for both President Kiir and Dr. Machar to compromise their differences in order to give peace a chance.  Even though the procedures have not been respected; he (Dr. Machar) has affirmed his commitment to bringing a lasting peace to south Sudan.

South Sudan has witnessed one of the worst horrific situations, which claimed more than a dozen people’s lives, millions of people displaced to neighboring countries, and hundreds of thousands trapped in UN Protection of Civilian Sites across the country.

When asked by a news reporter about UN sanction imposed on both of them, he responded by asking “you want the war to continue or you want to bring peace to the country.  You want to bring peace and stability to the country, leave the judgment to the people of South Sudan not the UN.  And since there is a political will on both sides to implement the peace agreement, the rest of the world should support us” He said.

Dr. Machar continued to object the accusation slummed against him that they are responsible for the atrocities committed by saying “I am a victim and you cannot slum a victim with the perpetuator.”  However, he also expressed that his appointment brings confident and trust building to ensure that South Sudan gets back to its feet.

The violence has claimed more than 20,000 people in two years.  Although tranquility has been experienced, some violations are still going on in Western Equatoria where tenths of thousands innocent civilians are being massacred on a daily basis and around million people displaced to DRC. Stay tune!
