Luo Community of Western Bahr el Gazal in Canada Condemns the South Sudan Government for Massacring Lou People in Wau

OTTAWA – In a press document extended to the Upper Nile Times, the Luo community of Western Bahr el Gazal in Canada is shocked by the recent indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians in Wau town that took place last two weeks ago resulting into the death of thousands of people.

According to the aggrieved community members who are deeply touched by the news of the killing of their relatives and community members, they said the “barbaric act committed by the government forces is unacceptable one.”  It is important that “we condemn, in the strongest terms possible, the unprovoked killing of innocent men, women and children in the hand of SPLA Division Five (5), Major General Thayip Gatluak” the letter read.

“This massacre started on Thursday, June 22nd, targeting non-Dinka civilians with the focus on the Fertit community in Wau town and the surrounding areas, killing about 4000 innocent civilians.”

“It is a sure fact that the killing is politically motivated and that it was perpetuated by the SPLA Chief of General Staff, General Paul Malong Awan, and that he is the one responsible for the massacre.”

The members of the community disclosed to the Upper Nite Times that their civilians’ properties got looted and more homes burned down to hashes.” They also said the Fertit community are the ones affected the most.

The community has also called “upon the International Community, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and all other human rights organizations to investigate what took place in Wau and to hold accountable all those involved in the brutal massacre.  President Salva Kiir, General Paul Malong and Division Five (5) Commander Major General Gatluak, must all be held accountable under International Laws.”

They also called “upon United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) to rise to the scale of the challenge so as to prevent loss of lives in Western Bahr el Gazal and in Wau in particular. UNMISS must also extend their services and protection to civilians who took refuge outside Wau town.”
