MOGADISHU, Somalia — The Al Qaeda-affiliated Al Shabaab militants in Somalia have stoned a teenager to death in the southern town of Sablaale on Wednesday, Witnesses said.
Witnesses who asked not to be named said Hassan Ahmed Ali, 18, was buried up to her neck and pelted with rocks and stones by hooded men in front of a large crowd in an open field in the town after a court they had set up declared her guilty of adultery. A man who presented himself as an Al Shabaab judge said at the execution site that Ahmed had confessed for raping a 28-year-old woman at gunpoint in an disclosed location in an al-Shabab-controlled part of the country.
“Ahmed has admitted his guilt before the Al shabab court and declared he was ready to be stoned to secure God’s forgiveness,” said the unidentified judge. Meanwhile, Ahmed’s family could not be reached for comment. In September, 2014, Al shabab stoned to death 33-year-old Safiyo Ahmed Jumale, who was executed in front of dozens of spectators in coastal district of Barawe of southern Somalia for secretly marrying several husbands.
Barawe which lies some 220Km south of Mogadishu is now under the control of Somali and AU troops after they pushed Al shabab out of the city early this month. Al-Shabab still control small swathes of territory in the south and centre of the war-torn country, after losing large ground to Somali National Army and African Union peacekeepers (AMISOM).
