JUBA – General Taban Deng, the Chief negotiator of the SPLM in Opposition has lashed out at the government for “its continuous arrests” of the SPLMIO supporters in Juba and in Aweil.
Taban said that the mass arrest constitutes a huge violation to the peace agreement.
“The government of South Sudan is proving to the people of South Sudan, the region and the world once again its disinterest in the implementation of the peace agreement. This negative attitude of the government comes at time when the Deputy Chairman and C-in-C of the SPLM/SPLA (IO) 1st Lt General Alfred Lado Gore is in already in Juba, and the First Vice President is confirmed to arrive in Juba on 18/04/2016” – Gen Taban’s condemnation statement reads.
Taban said that the continuous arrests put a dent on the health of the peace agreement.
He said that this is not a time for arrests. Rather it’s a time for building coalition to begin national healing process to fix the currently already fallen by the 2-year conflict.
The arrested SPLMIO supporters in Juba have reached 31 with the national security services continuing to hunt more people in Juba. In Aweil, around 10 people are reportedly arrested for trying to organise rallies for the SPLMIO.
