South Sudan to host East African secondary schools sports competitions

JUBA – The one-month old South Sudan may host the next year’s sports competitions involving secondary school students from the East African countries, officials have revealed.
The caretaker minister of information and spokesman of the government, Barnaba Marial, told The Upper Nile Times that South Sudan will now present a request to the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) to grant it the opportunity to host the 2012 tournament.
He said the decision was reached in a cabinet meeting on Friday chaired by the Vice President, Riek Machar Teny.
South Sudan was registered as a full member of the FEASSSA since 2009 after it participated in the 7th Edition, 2008, of the East African secondary schools competitions. This year, the newly independent country will also participate in FEASSSA games scheduled to be held in Mbarara, Uganda, on 26th August to 4th September 2011.

Officials explained that based on the mandate of FEASSSA to rotate hosting of these tournaments among member countries, South Sudan would like to have the honor of hosting the 11th edition 2012.

The region, which gained its independence from the rest of Sudan on 9th July, is also expected to represent the whole of East Africa in basketball competitions late this year in USA.
The participation in these regional and international sports tournaments would enhance politically, educationally and socially the Republic of South Sudan to obtain membership of regional and international organizations, officials have further pointed out.The Upper Nile Times
