JUBA – This year’s CECAFA club championship or often nicknamed The Paul Kagame Cup (named after the Rwandan President’s sponsorship of the event) will see the new nation provide a club to compete for the event in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
According to the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA), the Republic will be represented by Wau Salaam Football club for the two weeks event starting from July 14 to 28th.
South Sudan has only been admitted to the world’s governing body, FIFA in May this year. But the country has a promising talent due to the newly formed clubs league. The country also have talented players drawn from clubs and national team in North Sudan as well as players plying their trades in neighbouring countries.
According to the CECAFA General Secretary Nicolas Musonye, South Sudan national team will also participate in this year’s CECAFA Senior Cup Challenge.
Paul Kagame has been supporting the club championship for more than 10 years running.This year’s competition will see a staggering USD600,000 commitment from the President for the potential championship winner.
