ADDIS ABABA – South Sudan’s Football Team also known as the Bright Stars was eliminated at the Quarter Finals of the CECAFA cup by neighbouring Sudanese Team in an encounter that brought about a new rivalry in Football in the two neighbouring countries once at war with each other.
South Sudan, competing in a highly competitive international cup for the first as a sovereign country were the more convincing team to score throughout the encounter at the Addis Ababa, threatening to score throughout the first half.
The duel however remained goalless up to the maximum allowable time of 90 minutes after which penalties was required to separate the two after a gruesome 0-0 draw, reminscent of the goalless draw in the earlier group stages of the competition.
But experience by the Sudanese team played crucial during penalties with South Sudanese players missing a few of their penalty kicks, bravely saved by Sudan’s goal keeper Akram Elhadi who went on to score at later stages of the shoot out making a 5-3 win for the Sudanese Team.
Bright Stars made a huge statement of their own throughout the tournament beating highly experienced teams without conceding a single goal. The Stars will head home tomorrow highly delighted for defying the odds and uniting a lot of South Sudanese torn a part by the ongoing civil war in the country.
Sudanese team’s next encounter at the semi final will be either Kenya or Rwanda, two of the teams who are still to fight out the next spot.
