JUBA – A recent military command leadership meeting in Juba on the crisis in Malakal painted a gloomy hope for the SPLA in Government as more Generals particularly those in the Greater Upper Nile are put into microscopic watch, a leadership insider revealed.
The insider who refused to be named in fear of repercussions disclosed that the SPLA leadership and particularly the Chief of Staff, Paul Malong Awan was highly agitated and upset that “Johnson Olony was allowed to get away with tanks bought for him and his forces” to help the regime fight rebels lead former Vice President Dr Riek Machar.
“There was a sense of quietness at the meeting when news of Johnson Olony’s mutiny was revealed. Mostly because Olony was supplied with a lot of ammunitions and tanks. His men were also trained to drive new tanks. so to see that he defected and took all the equipment is particularly upsetting for the military.” – The official revealed.
Malong was said be blaming some sections of the military and the high command for Olony’s defection, saying he could have been airlifted to Juba or strategically killed in the previous confrontations with the government forces.
Gen Johnson Olony in his earlier fighting with guards of the Governor Kun Puoch and SPLA elements managed to overrun 2 ammunition stores belonging to the government. He also executed 9 tanks trainers who have been sent to train his troops on how to operate machineries and services them. All the 9 men were of Dinka in origin.
OLONY MIGHT NOT BE THE LAST HIGH RANKING GENERAL TO DEFECT TO THE OPPOSITION
The high ranking military official The Upper Nile Times spoke to revealed that several Generals hailing from Greater Upper Nile are being constantly put on watch list for fear of mutiny and defections. The leadership lost trust some generals “whose communication with outsiders have been monitored for the past year” , according to the official.
“Generals Buay Rolnyang, Johnson Gony Bilieu, Malual Ayom, Matthew Puljang, Ruei Puot and some junior officers are currently being monitored”, the official said.
The official didn’t reveal the reason for monitoring those men a part from saying that they are from Greater Upper Nile. He however said that Buay Rolnyang was particularly upset a few months back for the mistreatment of some Bul Nuer fighting with him in Upper Nile.
Olony announced his defection last friday in a major battle for Malakal which lasted for hours until he captured the town with the help of the SPLM in Opposition fighters he ferried accross the Nile.
